Deep dark plum aromatics hit hard at first, a result of the Carignane that is the primary grape. The Zin is bringing some classic spicy aromas that blend really well with the touch of blueberry from the Petite. The flavors marry quite well together on the palate. Strongest flavors are fresh plum, raspberry and spicy oak with some cedar-like characters. The mouthfeel is quite full-bodied with just enough tannins coming in from the Petite that it lengthens out the dark fruit finish for a few beats.
Varietals- 50% Carignane, 30% Zinfandel, 20% Petite Sirah
Vineyards- 100% The Dalton Ranch
Aging/Cooperage- 24 months in 2yr and 3yr old French Oak
Production- All three lots were gently crushed with varying degrees of whole berries left intact. The grapes were fermented in small bins for periods of 7 – 12 days. The fresh wines were then racked via gravity into small French oak casks for completion of fermentation and the duration of a secondary fermentation. After about three months, the wines were racked out of barrels and then blended together to create The Deviant. The new blend was then put back into barrel for an extended aging period. After a total of 24 months in barrel the wine was bottled with minimal filtration and no fining. 145 cases made.
Scott's Notes- Inspired by California’s “Field Blends” of old! A respectful nod to the wines that were all over California before Prohibition wiped so many wine companies out. While this wine is not a true field blend I wanted to explore the aroma and flavor alchemy of these varietals that have traditionally been blended together here in CA. Dubbed “The Deviant” simply because this throwback-type blend deviates so far from the current “norm” in California industrial winemaking and wine marketing.
