Varietal- 92% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah
Vineyards- 100% Shake Ridge Ranch
Aging/Cooperage- 16 months in 20% new French oak and 80% neutral oak
Production- Shake Ridge Vineyards benefits from deep, well drained, gravelly loam soils overlaying soft decomposing rock. However, the fine loam surrounding the rocks retains sufficient amounts of moisture that is gradually given up to the vine's roots during the season resulting in balanced growth of the vines. Crop load in the 2014 vintage was adjusted to shoot length once vegetative growth stopped in July. The cool season overall slowed the ripening process quite a bit. Harvest was done during the early morning hours to get the fuit to the winery in pristine condition.
Three different Zin clones were picked at ripeness and co-fermented to add complexity (Mendocino, Monte Rosso and Heart's Desire). Approximately 40% of the clusters were fermented whole. No yeast was added to this lot and the grapes fermented naturally with only a small amount of nutrients added to assist the "native" fermentation. 291 cases made.
Scott's Notes- Ann Kraemer's Shake Ridge Ranch is one of the most impressive examples of viticulture in the Sierra Foothills region, as each block is farmed with care and attention to detail. The fruit is harvested under headlamps and arrives at the winery in pristine condition. The resulting wine conveys these efforts.
