Strong raspberry and black cherry aromas combine with brambly flavors. Also juicy blackberry flavors and spicy tones. This classic Sierra Foothills style Zin finishes long & spicy with black pepper and lingering plum flavors.

Production- Big John’s vineyard was planted in the spring of 1997 on a slight hill facing southwest with a reddish to brown, slightly acidic loam and clay. The placement of the vineyard takes the maximum advantage of the spring, summer and fall path of the sun. With the rows oriented west to east, late afternoon winds help maintain temperatures ideal for Zin. The climate is typically “continental”, which combined with the elevation creates hot, dry days and cool nights. The Zin is the Deaver clone planted on 5BB rootstock. The weather in 2015 was once again perfect for Zinfandel. A classically hot Foothills growing season gave us thick skins which provided a bounty of color and a firm tannin structure to balance the bold flavors. The grapes were hand-picked and gently crushed into small bins for fermentation. No yeast was added to this lot and the grapes fermented naturally with only a small amount of nutrients added to assist the “native” fermentation. 426 cases made.
Scott's Notes- Traditionally, yields are kept quite low in this vineyard…just under 3 tons/acre. As the vineyard has aged and the roots have grown and spread, the consistent plum characters have become so prevalent in this classic Sierra Foothills Zin.
